Des Plaines River Report - 10/21/2013

The cold weather/water has definitely had an impact on fish activity and location. All of my normal smallie spots were nearly void of life. In a one mile stretch that has produced big numbers, I only pulled one dink. The water on that stretch is all a bit faster with random pockets and holes. Water clarity is stellar.

By the time I got to the end of that first stretch, I had a theory that they would be in slower water so I hiked back up stream to a few shallow stretches I know about with a pretty slow and steady current. I found 5 more fish - 2 smallies and 3 large mouth. The biggest smallie was only 12" and the large mouth were about the same.

Minnow patterns were the best bet but color preference had definitely changed. A month ago, bright was the way to go. This time around, they wanted something that matched the rest of the landscape...slightly drab.

  1. Always nice when you can make an adjustment during a fishing trip and have some success with it. Fun day with Bass. I love me some Smallies!

    1. I think that's always the trick, Mel. The biggest give away came when I stopped on a small gravel island mid river and just looked around for a couple of minutes. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a splash in some slow water and it all clicked for me. Observation is probably one of the best tools any fisherman should use.

    2. Couldn't agree more with your statement that observation is key, and so often, overlooked as we process our day on the water!

  2. I was supposed to fish the Des Plaines once a long time ago. Didn't make it. I may have to plan a trip to see if I know anyone back there.

    1. Not always....actually I think it makes it easier to find the fish that way. Find shade and/or cover - find fish. Well, that's how it worked when it was warmer at least.
