Captcha Test Run

The site's page rank was recently upgraded to "PR4" which means that we are showing up closer to the top for relative searches.

As a result of, I have noticed an immediate increase in spam posts that Blogger just doesn't seem to be filtering despite rampant reporting as spam on my part.

With that, I am going to try to implement the CAPTCHA garbage and hope that it cuts down. I know...I know...I hate it too but having to delete 30+ spam comments a day is getting old.

Sorry!

If I don't see a reduction in SPAM, then I will remove it and just deal with the spam.

    1. Unfortunately, yes...

I absolutely hate the captcha thing but it's the lesser evil.

I could get rid of it and moderate comments as they come in, but that's a giant pain in the arse and heaven for bid I can't check the blog for a couple of days, the comments would just be sitting there and slowing down the conversation.

The other alternative is to allow only registered users to comment but that would drive more people away than the captcha.

  3. I've found that eliminating captcha and only allowing registered google users has totally cut down spam both those needing moderated and those not. And my readership hasn't dropped any. Okay here I go...I hope I get it right the first time.

    1. I may try that, Howard...I am sure the readership wouldn't go down, but the interaction (comments) might and I rather enjoy comments.

With that said, I haven't gotten a single spam post since adding the CAPTCHA thing - I still hate having it on though.

  4. What is PR4 and who tells you that? Just curious.

Another Blogger user was complaining about the same thing in the last few weeks. Not sure it has anything to do with your ranking and more to do with Blogger. He doesn't use Captcha either but is considering turning it on too.

Self hosted WordPress site, comes with a plugin spam blocker called Akismet. Over a hundred a day spam comments and nothing gets through. I just have to remember to empty the trash.

Local fishing forums taught me a long, long time ago to completely control my content. Trust no one when it comes to that.

    1. Page rank (PR) is an algorithm that Google uses to place "importance" on world wide web sites using a scale of 1 through 10 (10 being hte most important, 1 being the least). Simply stated, the higher the page rank, the higher your page shows in Google searches. So a PR10 page will generally come up in the first couple of lines on a Google search and a PR1 would likely be multiple pages back.

Here is a link to a much more detailed analysis - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PageRank

You can check your page rank here - http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php

I checked out the Askimet thing...I was hoping it would work for blogger, but it doesn't. Who knows, maybe I'll get a hair up my butt one day to switch over to Wordpress but in general I like the layout I have right now and really don't want to change it.

  5. Hello fellow Anglers, I have recently went on holiday and lost my wallet. If you would be so kind as to send me $50,000 so I can get my hair done and buy a new dog while I'm here, I'd appreciate greatly!!

  6. Congrats on the Page Rank! Spammers are sure prowling lately, maybe it's the cold weather - but the good news is they're becoming more complimentary, don't you think?

Silver tongued spammers seem to slide through the filters better.

    1. HA! I swear I was think about that the other day.

It's as if they think that telling me how wonderful of an author and helpful my tips are, that I will then allow their spam to stay.

    2. Here is a fine example of silver tongued linguistics...

"Excellent goods from you, man. I have understand
your stuff previous to and you're just extremely fantastic. I really like what you've acquired here, certainly like what
you are stating and the way in which you say it. You make it entertaining and you still care for to keep it wise.
I can't wait to read much more from you. This is actually a great web site."

    1. You will get there, Adam! One thing I would highly recommend is setting up a blog roll! The more links you have pointing to your site, the more traffic you get!

Don't be afraid to ask other bloggers if they would throw your sight on their blogroll either...most are very willing to do so if you agree to put theirs on yours.
