Man missing after canoe capsizes - Chicago Sun-Times

Attention all of you canoe'ers! Be careful out there! This happened in a tiny little retention pond in suburban Chicago. This is purely speculation at this point, but I would imagine that alcohol and a lack of a flotation device are partially to blame.

No matter how big or large the body of water is, be careful and prepared!

Man missing after canoe capsizes - Chicago Sun-Times

Update 1: Search continues

Update 2: According to the Darien Patch, the second man claims that he saw Jeremy Asbell, the missing man, swim to shore. I sure hope this is the case! I could only imagine what his family must be going through

Update 3: As of 6pm last night, nothing has been found. The search of water had ended for the day at around 1:30 in the afternoon and will resume at 8am on Wednesday morning. According to one of the search crews, they have zero evidence of him being in the water, however, they have found no evidence say he wasn't.

Jeremy Asbell's family and friends organized their own search party to search the property around the pond for any clues around 5:30 on Tuesday night.

No matter the outcome folks, be safe out there!

Update 4:  It seems as if the Lemont Fire Department has finished searching with no new results. As I read some of the comments from the various reporting agencies on this story, I am becoming more and more convinced that foul play may be a part of this.

The Dupage County Sheriff's department are talking to people in the area to see if anybody saw anything. As of now, no new searches of the pond are scheduled.

My prayers are with him and his family.

Update 5: The search in the water and surrounding areas has resumed as of 1:30 this afternoon. No divers will be in the water, but a boat will be scanning the perimeter of the pond.

Update 6: Public works trucks have arrived on the scene and are lowering the water level in the pond.  It also appears that a notable amount of authorities have been showing up on scene and are focusing efforts near the edges of the pond.

Update 7: The body of Jeremy Asbell, the missing canoer, has been found this morning shortly after 7:00am according the Chicago Tribune. My thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends. He was the father of two children and seemed to have been well loved by those close to him. RIP Jeremy.

  2. You would think....although, with all the weeds and murkiness of the water, it may not be as easy as it sounds.
